What are closed marketplaces?

Closed marketplaces are platforms where you are only allowed to sell products if you have received permission from the platform. Access is granted by invitation only or after a strict admission process. This makes these marketplaces “closed,” in contrast to open platforms that are accessible to all sellers. The admission requirements vary significantly per sales channel, as each platform has its own set of criteria.

Why are these marketplaces “closed”?

A closed marketplace maintains control over the size and quality of its product assortment. Brands are only invited or approved if they align with the platform and its target audience. As a result, the product offering is frequently of higher quality, which strengthens customer trust. The selection remains clear and manageable. Due to the limited assortment, there is less competition, possibly leading to more revenue per product. Additionally, there is closer collaboration between the platform and its sellers, as there are fewer partners. As a seller, you are often assigned a dedicated account manager.

Which closed marketplaces are there?
